Eugene Melnyk needs to spendnow!
I know that Trevor has already posted

a beautiful article about this issue that can be read here but now that we are nearly half way through the season, this topic must be brought up again. There are several reasons that could lead to Melnyk not willing to open his check book but in the end, the positives out-weigh the negatives. Here are a couple more reasons indicating that the time to spend is now:1. Erik Karlsson is still in his primeI don't know what Eugene Melnyk is waiting for. Melnyk and GM Bryan Murray have stated many times that they will spend when "the time is right". Well when is the right time? NOW! There couldn't be a better time to spend. Erik Karlsson is the captain and undisputed face of the franchise and this hockey team isn't going to go anywhere without him. It's not as if Melnyk is waiting for the rest of the Senators to hit their peak because with the exception of Mika Zibanejad, basically all of the Sens' core are already fully developed. The Sens have a solid forward group, an exceptional starting goaltender, and the world's best defenseman in the middle of his prime.  splitting the talent between 2 teams. This creates an opening for other contenders like the Capitals. Right now, the Eastern Conference in the NHL is as weak as it will ever be. Excluding the Washington Capitals, all of the teams in the Eastern Conference are tied extremely close together. As of December 22nd, the division leading Habs are only ahead of the 5th place Sens by 4 points. The Caps are the only real threat in the Eastern Conference as the Rangers are aging and the Habs have shown that they can't compete without Price.A couple moves by GM BM and the Atlantic Division could be the Sens'.3. Don't spend? Face the consequencesOkay, I admit, this one is a little unlikely, but if you think about it, it's possible. In the past decade, we have lost stars such as Heatley, Chara, Fisher, Spezza and even Daniel Alfredsson. While Chara was due to the salary cap, and Fisher and Heatley were because of personal reasons, we lost two captains in Spezza and Alfredsson because of the internal cap. I might not be obvious, but Spezza probably left because he didn't consider the Sens to be a cup contender. This could have been fixed if Melnyk had opened up his wallet. Apparently, GM Bryan Murray had only offered Daniel Alfredsson $1 million so of course he signed the $5.5 million contract in Detroit. It appears that the Sens have forgotten about these events as once again Ottawa Store, they are not spending at all and that could cause rifts with leading goal-scorer, Mike Hoffman. If the Ottawa Senators still don't assemble a cup-contending team, even the unbearable could happen.I can tell that Bryan Murray is trying, he has talked to the Avs about Matt Duchene, signed MacArthur, traded for Bobby Ryan, and signed 5 free agents for an extremely low total, but with this internal budget restricting the team, there is almost no way the Sens can build a cup-contending should the Sens start spending?52%NOW! 17 votes)0%Never 0 votes)18%Next year 6 votes)6%After next season 2 votes)24%They should have started spending ages ago. 8 votes)33 votes total
